Are you tired of your pool sitting idle once the summer season ends? Do you wish there was a way to make the most of your backyard oasis year-round? Look no further than Remco’s Retrofit SwimJets – the innovative solution to transform your existing pool into a fitness centre for the whole family.

In this article, you’ll find everything you need to know, including:

  • How a SwimJet can transform your pool
  • The family-wide health benefits when a SwimJet is added
  • The Remco SwimJet difference

Read on to discover why adding a SwimJet to your pool will be the best family fitness decision you’ve made.

Elevating your backyard pool

A major challenge with backyard pools is their restricted size. Kids are adept at creative water play. However, for adults, limited pool size can mean they use it to cool down, but not much more.

For homeowners, having a pool that needs maintenance all year but that is only used occasionally is very unappealing. But what if you could add a Retrofit SwimJet to an existing pool, adding exercise, therapeutic and play benefits the whole family can enjoy?

Rather than travelling to the local public pool to swim laps, a Retrofit SwimJet supports you in swimming in a stationary position, much like a treadmill helps you run without moving forward.

And if your pool becomes used for regular exercise, you may be able to use it all year round rather than just in the summer months.

Health Benefits of Owning a SwimJet

Benefit 1: Regular Swimming

Swimming is renowned for its numerous health benefits, making it an ideal form of exercise for people of all ages and fitness levels.

Regular swimming can enhance overall fitness and well-being, from cardiovascular conditioning to improved muscle tone. Moreover, the low-impact nature of swimming reduces stress on joints, making it an excellent option for those with mobility issues or recovering from injury.

Benefit 2: Water-Based Therapeutic Exercise

Beyond traditional swimming, water-based therapeutic exercise provides a gentle yet effective way to improve flexibility, strength, and range of motion.

Whether you’re recovering from an injury or managing a chronic condition, the buoyancy of water reduces strain on muscles and joints while still providing a challenging workout. With a Swim Jet, you can effortlessly incorporate therapeutic exercises into your daily routine from the comfort of your own pool.

Benefits 3: Kids Playing in the Current

One of the most exciting features of SwimJets is how much children enjoy playing in the current they create.

The gentle yet invigorating water flow provides endless entertainment for kids, turning your pool into a dynamic playground. Whether pretending to swim against the current like little athletes or delighting in being swept along, kids love the new dimension of fun SwimJets add.

All About Remco Retrofit SwimJets

With over 30 years of experience in the pool industry, Remco understands the evolving needs of consumers.

Recognising the desire to utilise pools for exercise and therapeutic purposes beyond leisure, Remco embarked on a mission to revolutionise the pool market. After extensive research and development, the Remco SwimJet was born – offering unparalleled performance and versatility. Available initially as an integrated option for new pool builds, the range has recently expanded to offer a Retrofit SwimJet option for customers with existing pools.

What is a Remco Retrofit SwimJet?

Also called counter-current systems, Remco SwimJets are a godsend for people who want to swim athletically or for general fitness. This is because they distribute 160,000-550,000 litres of water and hour via a bubble-free current, creating the ideal resistance to swim against.

The Remco system generates a broad, powerful stream that flows evenly around the body, moving the whole body without straining it. Our SwimJets also supply a natural feeling flow that can be adjusted in strength to any swimmer’s ability level.

Types of Remco SwimJets

There’s a Retrofit SwimJet to suit swimmers of every level, ranging from beginners to seasoned experts.

Remco offers four distinct model options to suit your specific needs and preferences. With advanced German technology and energy-efficient design, Remco Retrofit SwimJets set the standard for performance and reliability.

The different turbine configurations of Retrofit SwimJets offer varied current strengths and widths. Although some Remco SwimJets are more powerful than others, users can always adjust their speed to suit less capable swimmers.

Single Turbine SwimJets

The single-turbine SwimJets come in two power options. The number in their name represents the volume of cubic meters of water flowing through the turbine per hour.  For example, the SwimJet 160 produces a flow rate of up to 160m³ per hour, and the SwimJet 275 produces up to 275m³ per hour.

Single turbine
Single Turbine

Users can turn the speed and resistance up and down across seven levels throughout their workout. The choice of level depends on the fitness and goals at the time.

Twin Turbine SwimJets

The twin-turbine SwimJets combine two single turbines mounted side by side and are available in two powerful combinations.

Moreover, the number represents the volume of cubic meters of water flowing through the turbines each hour.  For example, the SwimJet 320 turbines produce a combined flow rate of up to 320m³ per hour. In addition, the SwimJet 550 duo produces up to 550m³ per hour.

Why Remco Retrofit SwimJets are Unrivalled

With limited competition in the Australian market, the Remco Retrofit SwimJet is as powerful and effective as our integrated model, and these key features of our SwimJets stand us apart:-

  • Superior Swimming Current: Remco turbines create a variable, bubble-free current that delivers a superior swimming experience.

Swim jets, also known as counter-current systems, have recently risen in popularity. Nowadays, many homeowners enjoy the fitness and therapeutic benefits a resistance swimming system can bring to their backyard.

Understanding the various factors that influence swim jet costs is crucial, whether you’re considering upgrading your current pool setup or investing in one for a new pool build.

In this guide, you’ll find everything you need to understand the elements that make up the final price of a Swim Jet system, including:-

  • Why researching Swim Jet systems starts with your individual needs.
  • The different factors that affect Swim Jet costs.
  • Average costs of a Swim Jet in Australia in 2024.

Why researching Swim Jets starts with your individual needs

Researching Swim Jets is similar to deciding which pool cover to choose. This is because not all Swim Jet systems can meet different homeowners’ needs.

If you are a serious swimmer looking to train regularly at home, your need for a powerful water flow and bubble-free swim will directly affect which brands you consider.

Conversely, perhaps you are looking to extend the use of your existing pool for relaxation and therapeutic reasons. In that case, your focus might be on overall aesthetics, automation options and low noise levels.

Understanding your needs from the outset will help direct your research, and in turn, this will automatically rule out some options that aren’t suitable.

Which factors affect Swim Jet costs?

While pricing is reasonably accessible for the Swim Jet brands on the Australian market, the retail cost of the system is not where pricing ends. The final cost of a Swim jet system will be affected by many factors, some of which include:-

  • The Type of Swim Jet system
  • The number of Swim Jets
  • The Flow Rate of the system
  • The Power of the system
  • The level of automation you need.
  • Installation considerations

The Type of Swim Jet System

Pump-based Swim Jets

Badu Jet

Pump-based swim jet systems like Badu were originally launched in the 1970s.

Today, homeowners can retrofit or build these into new pools, using pumps and nozzles to create water flow. These pumps operate using water sucked in through an inlet and released through a separate nozzle. Their flow rate is determined by a pump ranging from 2 to 5 HP, resulting in a flow of up to 100 m3/h.

Spa-like pump-based systems, like Badu Swim Jets, offer entry-level pricing due to their lower flow rate capabilities.

The Hydraulic Vegetable Oil pump system used by the Fastlane Pro system uses significantly more power to deliver a broader stream and stronger current. It is, therefore, a lot more expensive than the Badu.

Turbine-based Swim Jets

Twin turbine Remco jet

The swimming turbine used in the Remco SwimJet works on the same principle as a ship’s propeller, creating a broad and powerful current that can offer flows of up to 1200 m3/h.

This power makes it a popular choice for high-level athletes who use it for their training. However, with its adjustable settings and four model types, the Remco counter-current system is also suitable for casual lap swimmers and those seeking remedial exercise.

Compared to traditional swim jets, turbine-based swim jets provide a significantly more effective counter-current system, and their increased power and improved energy efficiency come at a price.

The Number of Swim Jet Outlets

Remco twin turbine

The more Swim Jets you incorporate into your pool, the higher the cost. Swim Jets push water in a steady stream, creating resistance you can swim against, and the number of jets affects the power, breadth and intensity of this current.

  • Single-jet systems are typically most suitable for recreational swimmers. They’re also generally the most affordable.
  • Multiple-jet systems cater to more serious swimmers and athletes, providing a wider, more powerful, uniform current, thus commanding a higher price point.

The Flow Rate of the System

Ieal swimming position against a jet

The intensity of the water’s flow in a swim jet is determined by the velocity and breadth of the water as it returns to the pool.

A lower-powered jet may suffice for those seeking a gentle swim or therapeutic water movement. However, professional swimmers or those seeking a challenging workout will require higher-flow currents to remain buoyant.

When seeking quotes, be sure you compare the Flow Rates of the various systems, but also be aware that flow rate is only part of the equation. The position of the Swim Jet in the water can also affect the comfort of the swim. Some very powerful systems sit above the waterline and struggle to keep the swimmer buoyant for long periods.

The Power of the System

Fastlane Pro

It is important to note that more powerful Swim Jets require more robust motors and components, which increases their cost. Additionally, more powerful Swim Jets can have higher operating costs due to increased energy usage, but not always.

The first step in assessing power requirements is identifying whether you will need to upgrade to three-phase power before installation. There are Swim Jet systems like Remco’s SwimJet that only need a regular power-point located near the control box, but this is not the same for all brands.

Beyond installation, some systems can use a lot of electricity to power their operation, which the Salesperson should confirm at the quote stage.

The Level of Automation

Remco Remote

Automation and tech integrations have made their way into almost every corner of our lives, and swim jets are no exception. Automated systems can:

  • Instantly adjust Swim Jet intensity based on user preferences
  • Incorporate safety features and shut down the system if obstructions are detected
  • Offer preset workout routines, changing Jet intensity to simulate various swimming conditions.
  • Incorporate workout Apps to set and adjust workouts and water flow
  • Operate via remote control

While these features provide unparalleled convenience and safety, they come with a heftier price tag than their manual counterparts. Further, not all brands offer these convenient options.

Is it an existing or new pool installation?

If you already have a pool and want to add a retrofit Remco SwimJet, the installation costs will be minimal because little construction is required. However, in Australia, there are limited options for adding a swim jet to an existing pool offered by other brands. Homeowners cannot add the Fastlane Pro system to an existing pool because it requires a lot of clearance around the unit and the Badu system must be installed during construction.

Remco or Badu systems will work best if you plan to incorporate a swim jet into the construction of a new pool. However, it’s essential to understand that you must budget for additional expenses for creating the jet cavity and electrical work. This can add approximately $5,000 to the cost of your pool build.

Average Cost of a Swim Jet in Australia 2023

These are currently the published retail prices for Swim Jet systems in Australia as of 2024, and they include GST.

  • Badu Swim Jet integrated system – $9,000
  • Remco Single jet turbine system retrofit for existing pool – 275m3 – $18,476
  • Remco Single jet turbine system integrated new build – 275m3 – $16,286
  • Fastlane Pro retrofit system – $20,990

  • Unattractive Design: Understand the importance of selecting a swim jet with a design that enhances your pool’s aesthetics.
  • Limited Choice of Some Brands: Understand the importance of customisation that aligns with your swimming ability and preferences.

Swim Jet Problems & Solutions in Detail

1. Jet Position Impacts Buoyancy

Ieal swimming position against a jet

The placement of your swimming pool jet is not just about aesthetics; it directly affects your swim posture. If the jet is too low or high, your legs may not receive the necessary buoyancy. This can affect your ability to maintain a comfortable swim for long periods. It can also lead to inefficient swim training, causing discomfort and disrupting your workout rhythm.

Solution: Look for a system that does not sit too low or high in the water. Both integrated and retrofit units should be placed at the optimal height where the water flow can move comfortably around the body and support the swimmer in a horizontal position.

2. Water Flow Produces Too Many Bubbles or Turbulence

Jet stream bubbles

Creating the optimal swim environment involves achieving a balance in water flow. Excessive bubbles or turbulent water can be distracting and are not conducive to a naturally occurring lap swim experience. These hinder your focus during training, affecting your breathing and distracting you from a flow state.

Solution: Look for a unit with a broad water flow and minimal bubbles. Generally speaking, the broader the water stream, the less bubbles are created. The position of the swim jet under the water can also reduce the turbulence on the top of the water.

3. Power Bills Rise Significantly Due to Running Costs

three phase power cable

While the joys of a swimming pool jet are undeniable, the associated costs can be a significant consideration. Most systems require upgrading to three-phase power, incurring installation costs and ongoing expenses due to increased power usage. The financial implications can catch some owners off guard.

Solution: Check the power requirements for individual brands when seeking a quote. Some systems available can operate from a standard power point and do not require a three-phase power upgrade. For these systems, the reduced power extends to lower ongoing operating costs, too.

4. Swim Jet Noise Impacts Others

Family watching a swimmer

Pool equipment is notoriously noisy, and adding a swim jet can take this to new heights. Pump systems add to noise levels as they are located outside the pool itself, sometimes poolside.

In addition, systems located close to or above the waterline add noise to the surrounding areas when operating, affecting others in the vicinity.

Solution: Visit showrooms to hear the jets in action where possible. By comparing the noise level of pump systems with a brushless turbine motor, you can assess whether the noise generated will take away from the poolside ambience.

5. Swim Jet Takes Up Too Much Space in or Around Your Pool Area

Swim Jet pump pipes

Backyard pools are known for their limited space, making it crucial for every element to complement rather than dominate. A swim jet that takes up too much space can restrict your poolside activities and diminish the overall enjoyment.

Solution: The more integrated the unit is in the pool, the more space will be available for everyone to swim. Moreover, it is more practical if the control box can be located with other pool equipment rather than taking up space poolside.

6. Swim Jet Takes Away from the Pool Aesthetics

Fastlane Pro unit

Visual appeal matters, especially regarding your pool area. This is because an unattractive swim jet sticking out of the water can detract from the overall aesthetics of your pool. This not only affects the look but may also disrupt the tranquillity of your swimming space.

Solution: If you are building a new pool, incorporating your swim jet into the build is the most attractive and streamlined option. There are swim jets available that sit within a cavity in the pool wall, complemented by a stainless-steel grille.

If you are retrofitting a swim jet to an existing pool, look for a system installed below the waterline. The deeper the Jet operates within the pool, the less it will be noticed from above.

7. Limited Models Available for Some Brands

Twin turbine Remco jet

Not all swimmers have the same goals, and swim jet preferences vary widely. Some brands offer limited choices, and this lack of variety can limit your options for creating a customised swim experience.

Solution: Understand how you want to use your jet and seek quotes that align closely with your goals. There are noticeable differences between the water flow of different brands, and some systems even have twin jet options available for professional swim training.

With their multiple fitness, well-being and family fun benefits, swim jets have recently gained significant popularity in Australia. The variety of jets available has also grown; unfortunately, there is some conflicting information comparing the different brands.

Not all swimming pool jets are created equal. At Remco, we believe it’s essential to understand the differences between systems before you invest in one.

So, what do you need to know? This definitive guide will dive into all the essential information you need. It’s written for new users who have heard about swim jets but want to explore them further.

In this guide, you’ll find everything you need to know, including:

  • What are swim jets, and what are their benefits?
  • How do swim jets work?
  • What are the most important criteria to research?
  • Which swim jet is right for you?
  • Tips on how to prepare for a swim jet quote.

Read on and discover the best system to take your fitness and family fun to the next level.

What are Swim Jets?

Like treadmills help runners enjoy exercise while remaining stationary, swim jets offer similar benefits to swimmers.

Swimmer swimming against a Swim jet
Swim training made easy

Swim jets use pumps, jets or turbines to direct water flow to create a current strong enough to swim against. These currents hold you in place, eliminating the need to turn the end of the pool to swim laps. Swimming pool Jets are also known as counter-current swim machines.

What benefits do Swim Jets provide?

Swim jet systems are a valuable addition to smaller pools, extending their use beyond summertime enjoyment. These Jets can turn a compact swimming pool into the equivalent of a lap pool. This can give an existing pool a new lease of life and turn it into an exercise or training facility.

More than a machine for serious swimmers, Manufacturers have designed swim jets to extend the usability of your pool. The variable speed of their currents means walking and exercising against the resistance created at lower speeds is also possible.

Combined with the buoyancy of the water, swim jets can be ideal for therapeutic or recovery purposes. And kids can’t get enough of the endless play options the moving water creates.

How do Swim Jets work?

When understanding Swim Jet science, it’s essential to compare variations in the leading Swim jet systems on the Australian market.

Fastlane Pro Swim Jets

These draw water from the pool into a power unit, then propel it using a hydraulic vegetable oil-powered pump. Installers of the Fastlane Pro systems typically do so on the edge of the pool or against the pool wall.

Fastlane Pro Retrofitted Swim Jet
Fastlane Pro Retrofitted Jet

They require a lot of clearance around the unit and need help to integrate aesthetically into a new pool design.

The hydraulic pumps need significant power to operate, but they deliver a broad current to swim against. Endless Pools launched the Fastlane Pro in the US over 35 years ago.

Badu Swim Jets

These systems take in water from the pool but use a pump system to send it back through jet nozzles.

Badu Integrated Jet

Badu systems require less operating power than Fastlane Pros but also deliver a less powerful current to swim against. The systems can be fully integrated into a new pool wall or retrofitted on the edge of a new pool.

Badu Swim Jets were launched over fifty years ago in the US, using Speck pump systems developed in Germany. While the models and appearance of Badu jets have evolved, the pump technology employed has remained relatively unchanged.

SwimJet by Remco

Remco’s SwimJet system uses patented turbine technology to project water flow around your body. This keeps your feet and body elevated for the most comfortable swimming experience.

Remco Integrated Single Turbine SwimJet

It produces a bubble and turbulence-free stream of water, using 20 to 50% of the power needed by pump systems. Remco offers fully integrated SwimJet options for new pools hidden behind a stylish stainless-steel grill. A modern retrofit option is available for existing pools.

The technology behind the Remco SwimJet originates from Germany, where it has been the market leader for over ten years.

Which criteria should you consider in your research?

Following is a list of criteria you may wish to consider when deciding on a Swim Jet.

  • Swim Jet flow rate
  • System noise level
  • Swim Jet system power requirements
  • Ease of operation
  • Swim Jet warranty
  • Maintenance needs

Flow rate

For fitness, the current produced by your Swim Jet must be comfortable to swim against for long periods. A useful measurement of performance is the flow rate. This refers to the speed and volume the water re-enters the pool, measured in cubic metres per hour (M3/H), or volume in litres (L/M).

The table below compares the flow rates reported by the leading brands.

 Flow Rate M3/HVolume in L/M
Remco 275275 MH/34583 L/M
Remco 550550M3/H9167 L/M
Fastlane Pro1000 M3/H19000 L/M
Badu Stream II65 M3/H1100 L/M
Flow rates of popular Swim Jet systems available in Australia

Just as you create an ideal position when swimming laps, the Jet should work to emulate this as closely as possible. The flow rate of a Swim Jet assists with the position of your body in the water.

In addition to the flow rate, however, the position of the Jet also helps to create optimum buoyancy. If the jet sits too close to the waterline, it can fail to create a flow that pushes the legs up for the swim duration. However, a Swim Jet situated at the ideal height under water will create a flow that envelops the body, pushing the legs into the most natural position and making swimming very comfortable.

Noise level

Machinery associated with swimming pools tends to be on the noisy side.

Pump-based systems can significantly increase noise levels around the pool, impacting the enjoyment of others nearby. And the higher the system sits in the water, the more likely it will create external noise around the pool.

The absence of an external pump, the fact that the unit is fully submerged in water, and the use of a brushless motor make Remco’s SwimJet systems the quietest on the market.

We recommend visiting various showrooms to hear the jets in action before deciding.

Power Requirements

We all know energy costs keep rising. Therefore, understanding the variations in power requirements between systems is essential when researching your swimming pool jet’s setup and running costs.

With the most powerful turbine still only using 7amps, Remco systems are efficiently integrated into an existing power point. However, with some other systems using 35amps of power per jet, this will typically require a power upgrade. These increased power requirements usually apply to the ongoing running costs for some systems, too.

A quick comparison of power requirements for the leading brands is provided below.

Ease of operation

Something to consider is how easily you want to be able to control your jet settings. We recommend exploring operation options, as the easier it is to operate, the more enjoyable your swim will be.

Remco’s SwimJets are highly customisable with a remote control, underwater switch, and turn-key options. Furthermore, a dedicated App is available to program and track your workouts and performance.

Warranty

All Remco SwimJets come with a 5-year parts warranty; however, this is not industry standard.

Comparing the warranties offered by competing brands should be a standard part of your research process.

Maintenance needs

The more intricate the machine, the more likely it will require ongoing maintenance throughout its lifespan.

The Fastlane Pro’s hydraulic pump requires periodic oil changing and general maintenance.

In contrast, homeowners can maintain the Badu and Remco SwimJet options with visual checks throughout their lifetime.

As with all machinery in a water environment, we recommend that SwimJet owners invest in a scheduled maintenance program. This will keep systems operating as efficiently as possible.

Tips on how to prepare for a swim jet quote

  • Understand the main benefit you want to get from the SwimJet.

If you are enquiring about serious swimming, a salesperson will probably ask questions about the strength of your swimming ability. The salesperson may also ask how often you plan to use the jet throughout the year.
  • Consider any limitations of your pool design. If you are building a new pool, you have more options regarding the type of system you install.

However, existing pool owners must consider pool size and shape when deciding where the Swim jet will be positioned. It helps to have your pool measurements and a pool plan when calling for quotes to assist with this. For new and existing pools, a trained SwimJet sales technician will need to provide professional advice on the best positioning of the system for optimal performance.
  • Consider the aesthetics of your pool and the look you want to achieve.

Homeowners can fully integrate the Remco SwimJets and the Badu systems into the new pool design. Unlike the Fastlane Pro, they will be almost undetectable from outside the pool.

Remco’s retrofitted SwimJets could be a stylish solution if you have an existing pool. These jets are fully submerged underwater and have been designed not to detract from the pool’s overall appearance.

The Fastlane Pro systems are also located on the pool wall in existing pools. However, they break the water’s surface and add visual detail to a pool’s appearance.
  • Set a budget, but be prepared to consider costs from various angles.

The best system for you may cost more to install but could deliver long-term savings via lower running costs. Understanding any potential power upgrades you may need to consider before installation will also be helpful.

Installing a SwimJet can transform your pool into a swimming training centre; a therapeutic aquatic gym; or a playground for the whole family. The options are endless, and with the right SwimJet, you can enjoy all this and more without leaving your backyard.

But with plenty of options available, how do you choose the one to best suit your needs?

In this guide, we will dive into the world of Remco SwimJets. In doing so, we will explore four different models, each with unique capabilities, offering benefits to suit individual needs.

Choosing the right SwimJet can be overwhelming, especially if you’re new to this technology. This is why this guide is straightforward, and we hope it helps you navigate our models without any technical jargon.

We’ll explore: –

  • Fundamental Remco SwimJet information
  • Overview of Remco SwimJet models
  • The right SwimJet for different types of swimmers
  • SwimJet Price Ranges

So, whatever your motivation, let’s find out which SwimJet is your perfect match.

What are SwimJets?

A Remco SwimJet is a powerful system that creates a current in your pool. SwimJets allow you to swim in place continuously and are much like a treadmill for swimmers.

Also called counter-current systems, Remco SwimJets are a godsend for people who want to swim athletically or for general fitness. This is because they distribute 160,000-550,000 litres of water via a bubble-free current, creating the ideal resistance to swim against.

Our system generates a broad, powerful stream that flows evenly around the body, moving the whole body without straining it. Our SwimJets also supply a natural feeling flow that can be adjusted in strength to any swimmer’s ability level.

A swimmer swimming against a twin turbine SwimJet

We can install Remco SwimJets within the wall of a new pool or retrofit one to an existing pool wall. The turbines draw in water from the pool and expel it back in a wide flow. This is why SwimJet is known as one of the most powerful systems available.

Designed to be user-friendly, users can operate our SwimJets using an underwater Piezo switch or via a remote control. Furthermore, serious swimmers can pre-program their workout using a dedicated SwimJet App.

When we introduced our SwimJet range, we knew they’d quickly become popular, and it’s easy to see why:-

  • SwimJets allows serious swimmers to train at home in their backyard, adding a level of convenience public pools can’t rival.
  • Moreover, SwimJets add a fitness feature to any backyard pool, extending its use beyond simple summertime fun.
  • They provide therapeutic and relaxation benefits to other family members.
  • Children love their wide-riverlike current for adding fun new play options in the pool.
  • Remco SwimJets are remarkably energy efficient, making them more affordable in the long run compared to similar products.

Types of Remco SwimJets

There’s a Remco SwimJet to suit swimmers of every level, ranging from beginners to seasoned experts.

The different turbine configurations of SwimJets offer varied stream strengths and widths. Although some SwimJets are more powerful than others, their speed can always be adjusted to suit less capable swimmers.

Twin Turbine SwimJets

The twin-turbine SwimJets combine two single turbines mounted side by side and are available in two powerful combinations. What’s more, the number represents the volume of cubic meters of water flowing through the turbines each hour.  For example, the SwimJet 320 turbines produce a combined flow rate of up to 320m³ per hour. In addition, the SwimJet 550 duo produces up to 550m³ per hour.

A SwimJet for every type of swimmer.

Are you a professional or semi-professional swimmer? Perhaps you swim for fitness to improve your ability, or maybe you prefer the gentle exercise of leisurely laps? Regardless of your motivation, there’s a Remco SwimJet to suit you.

Starting with our basic model, recommended for recreational swimmers, our single-turbine SwimJet160 system will appeal to the whole family. This system has enough capacity to replicate lap swimming, and at lower speeds, it will also offer therapeutic benefits and family fun.

Or, perhaps you’re a recreational swimmer looking to develop yourself. The more powerful turbine in the SwimJet275 will build up your swimming abilities and challenge you. It’s also an excellent option for lap swimmers wanting to increase their swimming ability and endurance.

What if you are an ambitious amateur or sports swimmer? With two outlets working together, the twin-turbine SwimJet320 provides an extra-wide flow that enhances your training as it also challenges your fitness.

But if you’re a professional swimmer or athlete in the making, the SwimJet550 will deliver the broadest, most powerful resistance in our range. This twin-turbine powerhouse will take the best swimmer’s training to new heights in addition to elevating your fitness.

And finally, let’s not forget those swimmers who like to train together. Providing your pool is wide enough, Remco can install two single turbines so you can train side by side at customised paces.

Indicative Costs for a Remco SwimJet

Various factors influence the final price associated with installing a SwimJet, and we’ve written an article Exploring the factors that Influence the Price of SwimJets that discusses this in detail. Many homeowners take pride in keeping their pool pristine but underestimate the importance of balancing the swimming pool’s water chemistry. Further, few people are aware of its potential impact on stainless steel parts in integrated pool covers or SwimJets.

Ensuring your swimming pool’s water chemistry is in balance is the best way to minimise corrosion and maximise longevity. This article will delve into the key reasons to balance your swimming pool water chemistry, including:

  • Preventing corrosion and staining of stainless steel
  • Ensuring your pool cover operates at an optimal level
  • Maintaining the look of your pool environment
  • Protecting your family

The Science Behind Swimming Pool Water Chemistry

Pool water may appear calm and clear, but it is a dynamic environment. In fact, its influenced by various factors, such as rain, salt, chemicals and swimming.

If the water chemistry is imbalanced, it can become either too acidic (low pH) or too basic (high pH). Neither is ideal for swimmers’ health, the pool’s finish, or the integrated stainless-steel components.

Acidic water with low pH can corrode the stainless-steel surface, forming tiny holes on the metal surface called pitting. Over time, pitting can weaken the metal surface. On the other hand, alkaline water with high pH can cause staining of stainless-steel parts, affecting functionality and aesthetics.

Swim Jet grill showing staining from unbalanced water chemistry

Chlorine is often added to pools to sanitise the water, but high chloride levels can be corrosive to stainless steel. Chlorides can form a concentrated salt solution in these areas, which can corrode stainless steel over time.

Imbalanced salt in the water can also impact stainless steel by creating rust stains or adding to corrosion.

The impact of Water Chemistry on Stainless Steel Components

The Power of Prevention

Even the most robust materials can wear when exposed to imbalanced water chemistry. By maintaining proper water balance, you actively protect these components from corrosive elements.

Balanced water chemistry protects your investment and maintains its appearance. This in turn ensures you don’t have to replace parts frequently and can enjoy your pool cover for years.

Optimal Performance

Imbalanced water can corrode the surface of stainless-steel parts, hindering the pool cover’s operations and causing it to break down.

Ensuring the proper chemical balance is like providing your pool cover with the best environment to perform at its peak. Like other machinery, smoother operations will result in less wear and tear in the long run.

Maintaining Aesthetics

If pool cover components begin to corrode or develop stains, their allure can quickly fade.

The beauty of stainless steel is best preserved in a balanced aquatic environment. This ensures functionality and safeguarding your pool area’s aesthetic appeal.

Safety

When the stainless-steel components of your pool cover are compromised, so is its ability to provide protection.

Corrosion or any other damage can weaken the cover’s structure, making it less reliable. By ensuring balanced water chemistry, you’re directly reinforcing the safety of your pool area. A safer pool environment provides peace of mind for you and your loved ones.

Steps to Maintain Balanced Water Chemistry

  1. Regular Testing. Purchase a high-quality water testing kit and check your pool’s pH, chlorine, and total alkalinity levels. This should be conducted at least once a week.
  2. Adjust Chemicals as Needed. Based on your test results, adjust the levels of chemicals to bring them into the recommended range.
  3. Clean the Pool. Regularly remove leaves, debris, and algae. This not only keeps the water clear but also prevents additional chemical imbalances.
  4. Keep an Eye on Chloride Levels. While chlorine is essential for sanitation, ensure it remains within the recommended range.
  5. Consult Professionals. Periodically, it might be beneficial to consult with a pool professional to evaluate your pool’s water chemistry and provide guidance.

To prevent staining and corrosion of the stainless-steel components in the pool, it is of utmost importance that the pool water chemistry is maintained within what is considered safe and acceptable levels for salt, chlorine and pH in domestic swimming pools.

Remco advises our customers to keep the levels at the lower end of these ranges. We do this as it provides scope for upward fluctuation should levels increase.

Maintenance at the mid-range is also workable as it provides scope for increases should they occur. For instance, the salt range is between 2700-3400 ppm, and maintenance midway through this range (i.e. 3050 ppm) would be acceptable.

Regarding chlorine, where the range is between 1.0 and 3.0 ppm, maintenance midway through this range would also be acceptable. For pH, where the safe range is between 7.2 & 7.8, maintenance at 7.5 is workable.

We also recommend regularly wiping exposed stainless-steel surfaces to prevent a build-up of any impurities.

Remco’s Preventative Maintenance Program

Even though stainless steel is robust and reliable, it’s still susceptible to damage from unbalanced pool water.

To ensure your pool cover lasts and performs well, it’s essential to test and adjust your pool’s water chemistry regularly. However, Remco also offers additional servicing help to our customers via a Preventative Maintenance Program (PPM).

The best way to extend the lifespan of our automatic pool covers, our PPM occurs once a year by Remco technicians. This proactive servicing is often conducted during autumn and winter, providing peace of mind for effortless summertime swimming.

If you want to learn more about Remco’s PPM, please call our head office at 1800 652 962.

If you’re looking for a cover for your swimming pool, you’ll need to understand the factors influencing pool cover costs.

A quality pool cover will reduce pool maintenance and reduce running costs. Moreover, it should increase pool safety and last a long time. Manufacturing a bespoke cover takes into consideration many factors that have an impact on price, and one size or price does not fit all.

So, let’s explore what determines the cost of pool covers and which elements may be the most important to you in making a buying decision.

In this guide, you’ll find the elements that make up the price of your new pool cover, including:

  • Why are pool cover costs not standardised?
  • Why is understanding cost factors important?
  • What are the different factors, and how do they affect pool cover costs?
  • Typical pool cover prices for an existing 8 x 4m pool
  • Tips to help you get the best pool cover price quote

Why are pool cover costs not standardised?

No two pools are exactly the same. From the site specs and pool shape, to the materials used and the intended use of the pool, each one is unique.

Manufacturers will design and make your new pool cover specifically for your pool. It is not something you can buy off the shelf, and it’s an investment you want to maximise.

There are a lot of decisions to ensure you receive a cover that meets your unique needs. And all of these decisions will impact the final pool cover cost. For instance, an automatic pool cover costs more than a manual cover with roller, as you’d expect.

Why understanding costs is important

Similar to other big-ticket purchases, a pool cover is a considered choice. It requires research and decision-making so you can place your order with confidence.

Unfortunately, there is conflicting information online about different types of pool covers and their associated benefits.

People who have not previously bought one can find it difficult to compare factors and make a confident decision.

Homeowners might jump for the most affordable option. However, it may not deliver the benefits they are looking for, resulting in a costly mistake.

The factors that affect pool cover costs

Understanding the factors that influence pool cover costs should be a part of your research before getting a quote.

The key factors to consider are:

  • The type of pool cover
  • The dimensions of your pool
  • The method of cover operation
  • Ideal cover aesthetics
  • Method of installation
  • Location considerations

Pool Cover types

When researching, you’ll encounter a range of cover types with different names and claims. This can be confusing, and there are significant variations in pricing between them, which we’ll try to explain.

Solar Pool Covers

Solar pool covers are also called pool blankets or bubble wrap covers. They are large sheets of transparent plastic, typically made from polyethylene or polypropylene.

Solar covers use air-filled bubbles to add heat to the pool via solar transference. Solar covers are the most budget-friendly option, although they do not last as long as other options. Furthermore, they are restricted to manual operation, and their low price reflects their limited functionality.

Bubble pool cover

Thermal Pool Covers

Thermal or foam pool covers are crafted from multi-layered foam material. Also called thermal pool blankets, they can block UV rays and trap heat in the pool, although they do not add heat to the water. Further, the market prices them slightly above solar pool covers, which reflects the material quality.

Thermal pool cover

Premium Vinyl Pool Covers

If quality is important, premium vinyl covers are a step up from their entry-level counterparts. Manufacturers construct Premium Vinyl pool covers from robust cross-woven polyester, coated with PVC, and UV stabilised for long-lasting durability.

These swimming pool covers are treated by manufacturers to resist mould and feature reinforced anodised aluminium tubes and tracks for added strength and safety. Further, premium vinyl covers typically sit above the water, creating an air pocket that traps heat and provides incredible insulation.

Remco’s PoolGuard, for example, sits on the outside of the pool edge, above the water, as pictured below.

The Coverstar, however, is fully automated, running inside custom tracks, and the cover’s skin touches the water when fully extended. Connecting the water slightly reduces Coverstar’s thermal properties, but its high safety rating is very appealing to families.

Another benefit of a premium vinyl cover is its ability to completely seal the pool with no gaps. Almost all other cover types have gaps at the sides and ends, where the cover can touch but cannot seal. Beyond the aesthetic impact, gaps mean debris can enter your pool even while the cover is extended. The premium vinyl covers, however, keep your pool debris-free and well-insulated, saving you significant money in the long run.

The pricing of premium vinyl pool covers reflects the quality of the materials used. It also accounts for their long life span and significant increases in safety and insulation. There is a significant jump in pool cover costs between the entry options and premium vinyl.

Slatted Pool Covers

Consumers widely regard slatted pool covers as the top-tier choice for stylish swimming pools. Designed in Europe, these covers are fully automated and provide comprehensive debris protection, ensuring your pool remains clean year-round.

Their polycarbonate composition retains and harnesses significant heat, enhancing temperature regulation capabilities and reducing water evaporation, extending pool use.

While these premium pool covers represent the most expensive options, the higher automatic pool cover cost is offset by sleek design, ease of use and top-of-the-line energy efficiency.

Swimming Pool Dimensions

The dimensions of your pool are the primary influence on pool cover costs. Your manufacturer will quote the custom size you need using the pool’s length and width.

Pool Cover Operation

Do you want an automated cover that opens with the turn of a key? Or are you content with manually extending and retracting it?

Manual pool covers are more budget-friendly but may become less convenient over time. In contrast, automated pool covers offer effortless operation and improved safety benefits. Of course, the added benefits of motorisation will increase the automatic pool cover cost.

Pool Cover Aesthetics

The choice of pool cover material has a crucial impact on pricing. Fortunately, there are different options available to suit various needs and budgets.

For those with limited budgets, materials such as solar/bubble and thermal/foam are the most affordable options. However, their limited lifespan can mean those pool covers degrade quickly, detracting from the pool’s overall appearance and making it look unappealing.

In contrast, Premium Vinyl Pool Covers or Slatted Pool Covers will add elegance to your pool for a long time. Further, the higher price point of these covers reflects a manufacturer’s ability to custom-build them. And the quality of the materials adds to these pool cover costs.

Pool Cover Installation for Existing Pools

Homeowners often opt for above-ground pool covers when adding one to their existing pool to minimise installation expenses. Pool cover manufacturers create above-ground covers in various styles. Some versions are designed to be rolled up on the deck, wound up on a reel, or retracted inside a long deck-mounted system.

A premium option is to conceal an automated pool cover in the ground behind an existing pool. If adequate space is available, pool builders can construct a pit behind the pool’s wall. Moreover, the pool builder can conceal and incorporate these covers into the existing pool surroundings.

Pool Cover installation for new pools

Homeowners can integrate a cover into their new pool design in many ways, elevating its functionality and aesthetics. For example, automated covers can be hidden behind a false wall in the pool, installed below the pool floor, or under a tiled seat.

When budgeting for installing a concealed pool cover, it’s crucial to factor in the cost of hiring any external contractors. Construction and electrical work are the pool builder’s responsibilities. Any quote from the cover supplier will only include their installation costs.

Swimming Pool Location

A final consideration is the pool’s physical location, which can also impact costs. Most manufacturers will include transport costs associated with arranging installers to come onsite.

Typical pool cover prices for an 8 x 4m pool

We’ve discussed the factors that influence the cost of a customised pool cover. However, it’s helpful to understand indicative costings between the different types of covers available. The prices below are based on Australian prices for an 8 x 4m pool as of the end of 2023.

  • Solar or Bubble pool covers with a roller start at $1,160 inc. GST
  • Thermal or Foam pool covers with a roller start at $1,680 inc. GST
  • Manual Premium vinyl pool covers fully installed start at $5,139 inc. GST
  • Automatic Premium Vinyl pool covers fully installed start at $20,048 inc. GST
  • Automatic Slatted pool covers fully installed start at $20,488 inc. GST

How to get the best pool cover price quotes

Prioritise your preferences: Are you seeking longevity in your cover? Do you want to maximise the energy-efficient properties? Is poolside safety your major concern or are you mainly adding a cover to reduce maintenance? Regardless, knowing what you are trying to achieve by adding a cover will help direct your research and guide your decision-making.

Do your research: Once you’ve decided what’s important, narrow your focus to covers that offer those benefits as a minimum.

Make your wish list: Once you finalise your budget, measure your pool and confirm the level of automation you want. Then, it’s time to rank your top choices and start calling around for accurate pricing.

At Remco, we manufacture in Australia, hiring locals in Melbourne to make pool covers to suit a range of different shapes and sizes. As managing director of Remco, Australia’s leading pool cover company, my main responsibility is to develop cutting-edge solutions to keep pools clean and safe for families.

Like many of you, I read the newspaper. I have children of my own, so when I read the paper, I am often drawn to stories that relate to children.

When I read a story about a child that has passed due to falling in a pool, my immediate reaction is that my heart goes out to the parents and other siblings that the child has left behind.

Then I think about what could have been done differently.

Pool covers aren’t just about protection from falling leaves and debris

There is a reason why more people now have pool covers and it’s not just about the weather, falling leaves and debris like many people think. It’s about safety.

Would you choose a pool cover if it is going to save the life of your child, your neighbour’s child or someone coming to visit?

I know it is easy for me to say, “it’s a no brainer”, but let’s take a look at the facts and figures.

More than half of drowning deaths in a swimming pool happened from falling in it

Each year Royal Life Saving Australia releases a National Drowning Report which recorded that in 2019, 276 people drowned in Australia and about 11% of these deaths happened in a swimming pool. The majority of these deaths were children aged 0-4 years old and more than half of them happened because the child fell into the swimming pool.

The sad truth is, the majority of these deaths could be eliminated dramatically by simply installing a pool cover that provides maximum safety.

Why architects are encouraging pool owners to consider safety

Architects are continually ringing up and asking for specific details on our Swimroll pool cover and Coverstar pool cover, and we have seen a massive influx in the past 12 months. It all comes back to these terrifying statistics and the stories we read in the summer months about young children losing their lives to pool drownings.

As a parent, we have to make choices. While pool covers may be an added expense or an unsightly aesthetic choice, they serve a purpose. Protecting our children the best we can is our responsibility and if I can save one life from this blog, then it is worth it.

Is that a robot in your swimming pool? https://www.remco.com.au/is-that-a-robot-in-your-swimming-pool/ Tue, 18 Apr 2017 23:16:37 +0000 https://www.remco.com.au/?p=1843 The post Is that a robot in your swimming pool? appeared first on Remco.

Tokyo Institute of Technology has developed a swimming robot, so that when you are doing laps, you don’t feel so lonely.

While the swimming robot in certainly no Ian Thorpe, it does beg the question…will robots be outswimming us in the pool lane in years to come?

The answer is yes and no. With artificial intelligence, surely the robot knows it’s not in their best interest to win every single lap. We do need to be pushed, but sometimes we need that feeling of winning so that we can remember what that actually feels like.

If you think a swim-robot training partner doing lap after lap with you and matching you stroke for stroke, and perhaps checking out your stroke and giving you feedback when you stop for a rest on how to improve your stroke or breathing – it’s pretty amazing.

I’ve been in the swimming pool business per se for many years and we are always looking out for new products. We manufacture in Melbourne the swimroll pool cover, and make them for pools that have various shapes and sizes. A robot in the future will enhance your backyard safety for children and animals by whisking them off the pool cover and into safety before you even know it.

But it is our SwimJet that has the most relevance for a swimming robot. If you think of the high performance, unique turbine-driven counter, on a powerful current, where you swim against the current, wouldn’t it be cool to have a robot swimming beside you giving you instructions on how to improve your stroke, and maybe the odd Siri comment to keep you on your toes? Or better still, if the robot thought you were slackening off or can swim a little harder, that it automatically makes that change for you?

I’m interested in what the future holds. We were early adopters of the SwimJet because our business could see the future in families wanting more use out of their pools in summer and winter, as well as the trend of having smaller pools due to the reduced yard size.

Let’s see what comes out of Tokyo!

By Phoebe Moloney, published in The Age

2-year old Brodie climbs a fence chillingly fast. This video should be a wake-up call to all parents, particularly in light of recent drowning deaths in Australia.

On January 10th 2017, Wendy Atkinson posted a video to her Facebook page depicting her 2-year old son scaling a seemingly secure fence. In only 21 seconds, Brodie manages to climb the fence by using his toes to grip the bars and lifting himself up. When he reaches the latch at the top, the gate swings open and Brodie looks toward the camera, all smiles.

The fence in question is in Ms Atkinson’s backyard, fencing off an area to store wood, but states that it is higher than standard fences used for most Australian pools. 21 seconds is an extraordinarily short amount of time. It is a short amount of time to be distracted, by other people, or even a short amount of time to run in and grab what’s burning in the oven. External factors are unpredictable and there is no guarantee you will always be able to be there for your child.

Don’t risk the safety of your most loved ones. Invest in a Remco pool cover to increase protection around your pool, but remember, the most effective way to ensure the safety of your children is vigilant supervision.

Pool deaths are, sadly, a common occurrence throughout Australia as a whole, due to our high heats and love of water. Unfortunately, there has been a recent spate of child drownings, particularly in NSW. In 2015, there was a 30% increase in child drownings in Australia. What’s even more troubling about this is that most of these drownings have taken place in private pools, and these deaths are easily preventable with the use of a pool cover.

In November last year, two girls aged under 5 drowned in South Brisbane. There was another early January 2017, with a toddler losing her life in Macquarie Fields in New Zealand. Sadly, a set of twins in Western Sydney passed away almost two weeks after being found unconscious in their backyard pool, around Christmas last year.

It’s extremely distressing for us at Remco to know that there are child drownings that could be easily preventable with appropriate protective barriers. Twenty-eight of these pools were fenced, but twenty-four of them had defects that potentially enabled a child to access the area. Clearly, fences aren’t enough to protect our children.

To highlight the risk, a child can drown in as little as 5cm of water, in less than 2 minutes. A backyard pool, with much more water than 5cm, is an extremely dangerous environment for children.

There are four ways to prevent young children drowning.

Supervision | Keeping a close watch

Young children should never be left alone, or with another child, in or around any body of water. Insufficient supervision is the most significant contributing factor to child drownings, so this is of paramount importance, and the most effective prevention method.

Be sure to designate a “watcher” when there are multiple adults around, such as at a family gathering.

Eliminating hazards

Try to keep the pool fence free from devices your child might use to climb the fence. It is also a good idea that buckets and baths be left empty when not in use. Make sure there are no toys or floaties in the water, as a child may attempt to retrieve them.

Environmental measures

A survey by CHOICE revealed that over half of all Australian pool fences failed to meet a key safety aspect of the Australian standard for pool fencing. It is crucial to ensure the pool fence is in good working order, or other protective barriers and pool covers are in excellent condition.

Education and developing skills

Most young children can develop swimming skills from a young age, and though this will help a child, it will not drown-proof them. Teaching them that the pool is dangerous and not to be used when there are no adults around will also help.

Children under five are at the highest risk, and the majority of these drownings occur in and around the home, mostly in private swimming pools. Active adult supervision, restricting access to water, and importantly, appropriate barriers and covers around the pool will help decrease this tragic statistic.

Please be vigilant with your children, particularly in these sweltering summer days where they may be looking for a reprieve from the heat. Many of the children who passed away were left unattended for ten minutes or less. Invest in a Remco Pool Cover and protect your children.

Please stay safe, be alert, and keep an eye on your little ones.
